Writing a research paper is a massive undertaking that requires extensive planning, research, writing and revision. As an undergraduate student, one of the largest papers I had to write was a 15-page research paper for my History of Psychology course. The assignment was to research an important psychologist from history and their impact on the field of psychology. This was truly one of the most challenging writing assignments I had taken on during my university career thus far.

The first major step was to choose a topic and psychologist to research. I knew I wanted to focus on someone foundational to the early development of psychology as a field of study. After reviewing some of the important pioneers, I settled on researching Wilhelm Wundt and his establishment of the first formal psychology laboratory. Wundt is widely considered to be the founder of experimental psychology and his work in the late 19th century helped shift psychology away from being merely a branch of philosophy into an empirical science. I felt his impact on the development of psychology as a scientific discipline would make for compelling research.

Once I selected Wundt as my topic, the real work of researching and compiling information began. I started by visiting my university library and scouring their expansive collection of scholarly books and journals related to the history of psychology. Reading through general histories of the field provided helpful context and led me to more specific sources about Wundt’s theories, experiments and influence. I took thorough notes by hand, documenting full citations so I could properly attribute information. Filling multiple legal pads with notes took several intensive library visits.

In addition to books, I utilized the extensive online databases available through the library to search for relevant journal articles. This proved invaluable for finding contemporary analyses of Wundt’s work from modern scholars in the history of psychology. Reading these current interpretations aided my understanding of Wundt’s true impact that has evolved over time. I also wanted to incorporate direct quotes from Wundt’s own writings when possible to represent his ideas and voice. Retrieving some of his classic texts from the 1890s in their original German proved quite difficult but added an authentic element to my paper.

After weeks of research, I had compiled a truly massive collection of detailed notes, but now the real challenge began – synthesizing everything into a coherent paper. The introduction describing Wundt’s importance and an overview of his career was straightforward to draft given my background reading. Structuring the bulk of the paper proved immensely difficult with so much information compiled. Through several re-organizations and outlines, I settled on focusing the body of the paper around three major areas: Wundt’s establishment of the first psychology laboratory in Leipzig, his early experimental investigations into reaction times and sensory experience, and his development of structuralism as the first approach to psychology.

Within each section, I sought to provide context, describe Wundt’s research methods and theories, analyze the impact and reception of his work, and include relevant historical quotes. Weaving together so many details and sources into a cohesive narrative was an intensive process. I wrote and re-wrote each section multiple times to refine the flow and integrate various perspectives while still maintaining a clear focus on Wundt as the subject. The conclusion wrapped up by summarizing Wundt’s enduring influence on establishing psychology as the interdisciplinary science it is today.

Even with the extensive research compiled, the paper grew well beyond the assigned page count. Careful editing was required to trim extraneous details while maintaining the core substance. Ensuring strict adherence to my university’s citation guidelines throughout also proved a significant undertaking. Once I submitted an early draft for feedback, my professor provided helpful critiques that guided further improvements. Multiple revisions refined arguments and requested additions of historical context. All told, completing this intensive research paper from start to final submission involved approximately six weeks of dedicated work.

The process of writing such an in-depth research paper taught me invaluable lessons about careful planning, effective research methods, organizing complex information, and refining academic writing. With each revision, my understanding of Wundt as a pioneering figure and analysis of his theories deepened. While intensely challenging, having to review, synthesize and rigorously cite such a breadth of credible sources on the history of psychology aided tremendously in my own learning. Completing an undergraduate thesis of this scope not only fulfilled an important assignment but expanded my knowledge of the field’s foundations in meaningful ways. My experience writing this research paper proved highly worthwhile preparation for advanced studies requiring similar scholarly investigations and compositions.
