SPREAD THE LOVE...

Writing has always been an integral part of who I am. From the time I was young, I have found immense joy and fulfillment in expressing myself through the written word. Looking back, I can now see how my early experiences helped shape me into the writer I am today.

Some of my earliest memories involve sitting at the little blue plastic table in my childhood bedroom, scribbling stories and poems with my chunky crayon stubs. Even then, at such a young age, I felt a magnetic pull towards putting my thoughts down on paper. While other kids my age were content playing with toys or watching TV, I would spend hours locked away in my imagination, crafting elaborate tales. My parents still have some of those handwritten stories saved in a box in the attic, and no matter how crude the drawings and spelling errors were, you can clearly see the budding seeds of creativity taking root.

In elementary school, writing became one of my favorite subjects. I thrilled at the lessons where we would pull out our composition notebooks and be set free to conjure up whatever stories we desired. While assignments for math and science homework often felt like a chore, the writing prompts were an invitation for play. I cherished bringing home those scribbled pages, folded neatly into my backpack, eager to show my parents what adventures I had dreamed up that day. Through writing, I started to develop confidence in expressing myself and my unique point of view.

It was also around this time that I started keeping a journal, which became a cherished outlet. At the end of each day, I would scrawl out the events, describing small triumphs and frustrations alike with the unbridled honesty that only a child possesses. Looking back through those worn pages now, it’s fascinating to witness the development of my voice and thoughts over time. Whenever I’m feeling uninspired as a writer, revisiting some of those journal entries from my youth always seems to renew my passion. The raw vulnerability and imagination on display reminds me of why I was first drawn to commit my inner worlds to paper.

In middle school, my interest in creative writing blossomed further. My teachers recognized a spark in me and encouraged me to stretch my abilities, entering local writing contests and sharing pieces in class. The positive feedback and recognition started to validate writing as a potential pursuit beyond childhood scribbles. I would devour books voraciously, analyzing stylistic techniques and absorbing lyrical turns of phrase like a sponge. At home, I kept piles of notebooks bursting with poetry, short stories, and even the beginnings of my first novels – all fueled by a passion that was growing stronger with each passing year.

It was around this formative time that I had my most profound experience with the power of narrative. Our language arts teacher assigned the class an empathy project, where we had to write a story from the perspective of someone with a different life experience than our own. I decided to attempt voicing the struggles of a refugee fleeing from war-torn regions – a scenario utterly foreign from my comfortable suburban life. Pouring through research and stretching my imagination, I crafted a tale that transported readers into another’s shoes and exposed harsh realities many choose to ignore. When I shared my piece to the class, the potency of the story in educating and connecting people was humbling. It was then that I truly grasped writing’s ability to build understanding across divides. That project lit a fire in me to use my gift purposefully through spreading awareness and sharing unheard narratives.

In high school, I dove headlong into creative writing clubs, literary magazines, and independent projects. Teachers continued championing my skills, connecting me to esteemed mentors who exposed me to advanced techniques. I began seriously exploring different genres and styles, gaining valuable feedback from published authors. The process was messy but illuminating, helping me identify my authentic voice. Alongside academics, I poured countless evenings and weekends into crafting the best submissions possible for esteemed writing contests. While rejection was difficult to stomach at times, the push to sharpen my technique proved invaluable preparation for pursing writing after graduation. Entering my senior year, I felt a surge of confidence in my burgeoning narrative abilities and vision for the future.

Since graduating high school, I have made writing my passion and career. I studied creative writing and literature in college while interning at top publishing houses and literary magazines. The experience affirmed that I wanted to dedicate my life’s work to the craft. After school, I worked as a freelance writer and editor for several years before landing my dream job at a prominent creative nonfiction imprint. Every day, I get to immerse myself in inspiring stories while helping new voices share their narratives with the world. Though the industry is challenging, working with gifted storytellers makes the difficulties worthwhile. I’m also constantly challenging myself with independent projects on the side, whether poems, memoir essays, or fiction.

Looking back on my winding writing journey so far, I’m filled with gratitude. The path has been a bundle of lessons – in developing discipline, facing rejection, collaborating, refining technique, and overcoming self-doubt. But most of all, it has connected me with a purpose. Through narrative, I have found a way not just to express myself, but also to build understanding across differences and amplify unheard voices. I look forward to the adventures still ahead, whether scaling new heights in my career or taking risks with inventive projects. Writing will always be the gift that keeps on giving – of fulfillment, community, curiosity, and creative problem solving. I’m excited to see where the road leads next and how many more stories are yet to unfold.
