It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the process, but breaking it down into smaller, more manageable steps can make it seem less daunting. Here are some tips to help you through writing your research paper:
Pick a topic. The hardest part is often choosing a topic that is interesting and feasible for your research paper. Look through recent articles and publications to see what scholars are researching now. Consider topics related to your major or a particular interest of yours. Once you have a few options in mind, discuss them with your professor to get approval on a topic that is appropriate for the scope of the assignment.
Do background research. Once you have your topic, you need to become an expert on it. Start by researching your topic broadly to get familiar with the key terms, major debates, theories, and prominent scholars. Search academic databases, trusted websites, and books related to your topic. Take thorough notes so you can easily reference useful sources later. This background research will help you narrow your topic into a specific research question or thesis statement.
Formulate a research question or thesis statement. Now that you understand the broader topic area, you need to develop a specific research question you want to explore or a thesis statement asserting an argument. A strong research question is answerable and focused, while a thesis should be a clear, debatable statement about your topic. Have your research question or thesis reviewed by your professor for feedback before proceeding.
Develop an outline. With your research question or thesis statement in place, make an outline to map out the main points and structure of your paper. Determine the overall argument or answer you will make to your question and how you will support it with evidence. Your outline should include an introduction, three to five main body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Leave space under each point to write sources that support those ideas.
Conduct in-depth research. With your outline guiding you, it’s time to conduct research focused specifically on answering your research question or supporting your thesis. Search for recent, reliable sources like peer-reviewed academic journals. As you find relevant information, take detailed notes including direct quotes and paraphrasing. Be sure to record complete citations to properly cite sources in your paper. Research until you have several supporting pieces of evidence and perspectives for each point in your outline.
Analyze and synthesize sources. As you compile information from your research, analyze how sources relate to and support your overall argument. Look for agreements and disagreements among scholars in your topic area. Synthesize sources by discussing common threads and evaluating diverse perspectives. Develop your own informed perspective on the issues rather than just reporting what others have said.
Write your paper. Using your outline and research notes, begin drafting the paper. Start with a clear and compelling introduction that hooks the reader and previews your main argument. For each body paragraph, include a topic sentence then support it with analysis of sources. When directly quoting or paraphrasing sources, be sure to cite them properly. Conclude by summarizing the main points of your argument and considering any limitations or need for further research.
Get feedback and revise. Have other writers, the campus writing center, or your professor review your draft to catch any issues. Incorporate their feedback by clarifying points, expanding analysis, fixing citations, and improving structure and flow. Refine your writing style as needed. Once revised based on feedback, do a final proofread yourself before submitting the completed paper.
