Essay Assist
SPREAD THE LOVE...

Online essay writing tools have become increasingly popular study aids for students. With a few clicks of a mouse, these digital assistants can outline, draft, and even fully generate written assignments on a wide variety of topics. While these tools have streamlined and automated certain aspects of the essay writing process, there are also some risks and limitations students should be aware of before relying too heavily on automated writing assistance.

One prominent online writing tool is Grammarly, which is commonly used as a spelling and grammar checker. Grammarly scans written content for errors related to punctuation, syntax, style, and more. Grammarly is not intended to completely write essays on its own. The tool is designed to improve writing by catching and correcting surface-level mistakes, not to replace critical thinking or generate unique substantive content. Grammarly works best as a complement to an author’s own writing, not a sole means of production.

Other tools aim to automate more of the writing process beyond editing. For example, tools like PaperRater, EssayRobot, and Clinch generate sample essay outlines, paragraph structures, and even complete first drafts based on a topic and other user inputs. These tools analyze a provided topic or thesis statement and quickly return a written response complete with introductory paragraph, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The speed and automation can seem appealing to students facing pressing deadlines or lacking writing experience.

There are some key limitations students should be aware of regarding fully automated writing tools. First, the quality and originality of the generated content is unlikely to meet standards for most high school, college, or graduate level writing assignments. The language may come across as stilted or lacking a true author’s voice. Automated tools also cannot substitute for an author’s own high-level analysis, synthesis of multiple credible sources, or creative interpretations. Simply submitting computer-generated work as-is risks accusations of plagiarism or failure to meet the assignment’s cognitive requirements.

At best, automated writing tools should be used as a starting point to be heavily edited and improved by the student author. Important elements like thesis development, inclusion of specific evidence, transitions between ideas, and conclusion development may need to be largely rewritten by the student. Tools providing basic outlining or draft support should not be mistaken for replacing the intellectual work of researching, analyzing, and communicating complex ideas in an original fashion.

Reliance on automated writing also risks worsening students’ own composition skills if they become overly dependent on computer-generated work over time. The writing process requires critical thinking, synthesis of research, and effective communication – skills that are built through extensive practice over time. Simply feeding topics into a computer and copy-pasting outputs hardly substitutes for the deeper learning that comes through the trials and revisions of multiple drafting cycles. At worst, online writing assistance could enable plagiarism or serve as a crutch hindering independent academic performance.

Another significant limitation of current automated writing tools is their inability to address all topics or subject areas with equally high quality outputs. Most tools were designed using general corpora of text focused on common secondary and introductory college assignments in fields like English, history, and social sciences. More advanced, specialized, interdisciplinary, or technical topics may exceed the knowledge bases of existing automated systems. Major research assignments requiring extensive primary source analysis or literature reviews also push the limits of computer-generated writing. Users should carefully evaluate if a given online tool is appropriately equipped to adequately address the complexity of their specific writing task.

It is also worth noting that all online writing tools operate as proprietary “black boxes” – students have no way of verifying exactly how the tools work or what types of training data they used. Outputs could potentially include biases, factual errors, plagiarized content, or even intentionally misleading information inserted by tool creators. While companies do evaluate tool accuracy, complete transparency about underlying algorithms is most often lacking. This “black box” effect means students have to selectively evaluate generated content rather than blindly trusting in tool outputs.

While online essay writing tools can streamline certain initial drafting processes like outlining or catch surface errors, they should not replace a student’s own research, critical thinking, and writing for high-stakes assignments. The most effective uses of such tools may involve light editing assistance or as a starting point warranting significant refinement by the student author. Over-reliance risks worsening composition skills or enabling shirking of intellectual effort. Most importantly, students should evaluate tool limitations, topic fit, and selectively verify the quality and veracity of generated content rather than accepting it without discrimination. With careful and judicious use integrated thoughtfully into the writing process, online writing assistants can complement but not substitute for independent student work.

In the future, automated writing tools may continue advancing to address more complex topics and subject areas at higher quality levels. Systems using more domain-specific training data and procedural rules for composition could generate content meeting standards of academic integrity. Explicit transparency into tool methodologies may also help address “black box” concerns. But for the time being, while essay-writing tools offer some convenience and support surface-level tasks, their limitations remain too great to replace human critical thought, research skills, and compositional expertise for high-stakes scholarly work. The most rigorous assignments still demand independent analysis, synthesis, and communication that only a student author can provide.

Online essay writing assistance tools are best used judiciously and selectively as complements rather than replacements for a student’s own cognitive engagement and compositional efforts. Careful evaluation of tool limitations and generated outputs is advised before integrating them into the writing process. With awareness of risks like overdependence, plagiarism, and declining composition abilities, online writing aids can streamline initial drafting stages when outputs are significantly refined by the student author. But independent research, thinking, sourcing, and original composition remain essential for meeting the cognitive requirements of serious academic writing at post-secondary levels. Automated tools may continue progressing but currently cannot substitute for a student’s first-hand intellectual work.
