Including tentative citations allows the writer to keep track of sources and plan where evidence needs to be incorporated to support different elements of the paper.

Another formatting tip is to use the outline to lead with the strongest or most unique aspects of the paper that will catch the reader’s interest right away. Thesis statements or argument introductions should aim to articulate what truly distinctive finding or perspective the research has uncovered. The conclusion is the last chance to leave an impression so saving the most impactful conclusion for last is advisable.

As the research process moves forward, the outline can and should be revised and improved upon as new information and insights emerge.
