Narrative Essay Samples
A narrative essay tells a story. In primary grades, it is often based on students’ personal experiences. Here are two narrative essay samples of varying lengths for different primary grades:

Sample 1 (Grade 2):
My Birthday Party
On my 7th birthday, I had a big party. All my friends from school came over. My mommy made a special cake with blue icing and 7 candles. When I blew out the candles, everyone clapped. Then we played party games like pin the tail on the donkey. I was really good at it! After the games, we ate pizza and cake. My favorite part was opening the presents. I got lots of cool toys like dinosaurs and cars. It was the best birthday ever! I can’t wait for my next party.

This short essay focuses on one event from the writer’s life and provides details about what happened in chronological order. While simple, it captures a personal experience and meets expectations for a Grade 2 narrative.

Sample 2 (Grade 4):
My Camping Trip with Grandpa
Last summer, my Grandpa took me on a camping trip in the woods near his house. We packed our bags on Friday night with a tent, sleeping bags, flashlights and lots of snacks. Early Saturday morning, we loaded up the car and drove two hours to the campsite. When we arrived, Grandpa showed me how to set up the tent. It took a few tries but we finally got it standing. That night, Grandpa taught me how to start a campfire and make s’mores. I roasted the perfect marshmallow. After dinner, we sat by the fire sharing stories and making shadow puppets against the inside of the tent. Even though it rained in the night, I had so much fun in the great outdoors with Grandpa. It was an adventure I’ll never forget.

This longer narrative essay uses more descriptive language to paint a picture of the camping trip for the reader. More details are included to engage the audience while still telling a clear storyline. This sample is appropriate for the higher expectations of Grade 4 level writing.

Descriptive Essay Samples
Descriptive essays aim to use vivid language to describe a person, place or object. Here are two samples of descriptive essays for primary students:

Sample 1 (Grade 1):
My Dog Lucy
Lucy is my dog. She is brown and white. Lucy has short fur and a pink tongue. Her ears stand up. Lucy likes to play with her toys and go for walks. When I call her name she wags her tail. Lucy is very cute. I love my dog Lucy.

This brief essay describes the key features of the writer’s dog to help the reader visualize Lucy. At a Grade 1 level, the focus is on listing simple observable details using basic vocabulary. Sensory imagery is not expected at this stage.

Sample 2 (Grade 3):
A Rainy Day
When I woke up, the sky was gray. As I pulled back the curtains, I saw raindrops streaming down the window pane. The dark clouds hung low in the sky and the grass was already wet from the falling rain. I could hear the steady pattering of raindrops hitting the roof. It was the perfect day for staying inside, curled up with a good book by the warm glow of the fire. Later, I watched as rivulets of water cascaded off the edges of leaves and raced each other to the ground below. The cool mist rose up around tree trunks and immersed the whole world in a soothing veil of moisture. I loved the fresh smell and cozy feelings a rainy day brought.

This Grade 3 level descriptive essay uses more advanced vocabulary and sensory details to set the scene. Words like “pattering”, “rivulets”, “cascaded” and descriptions of sights, sounds and smells engage the reader in the rainy atmosphere. This shows increased skill in descriptive techniques.

Opinion Essay Samples
Opinion essays allow students to express their views on a topic. Here are two samples of opinion essays at different levels:

Sample 1 (Grade 2):
My Favorite Food
My favorite food is pizza. I like pizza because it tastes yummy. The cheese is so good! I also like eating the crust. Sometimes my family orders pizza from our favorite restaurant on Fridays. My favorite type of pizza has pepperoni. When my friends come over, we always ask my mommy to make pizza. Pizza is the best food ever!

This sample opinion essay shares a simple opinion about a favorite food. At a Grade 2 level, support is limited to personal preferences rather than facts or reasons. The language and structure are basic but accomplish the goal of stating an opinion.

Sample 2 (Grade 5):
Video Games or Outdoor Play – Which is Better?
Both video games and outdoor play have benefits for children, but I think playing outside is ultimately better for kids. While video games can be entertaining and help develop hand-eye coordination, outdoor activities provide important exercise and fresh air. When kids go outside, they are active and moving rather than sitting still like when playing video games. Playing sports or simply running around gets their hearts pumping and keeps their bodies healthy. Outdoor play also encourages socializing with friends and using their imagination as they explore nature. Though I occasionally enjoy gaming, I believe kids should spend more time outside enjoying the benefits of physical activity and engaging with the real world rather than being confined indoors in front of screens. Overall, outdoor play is the better choice for children’s well-being and development.

This sample opinion essay compares two options and provides reasons supported by facts and logic for the opinion. The writer expresses a view and defends it with details. The structure and language are more developed to meet the higher expectations of Grade 5 essay writing.

Conclusion
Providing primary school students with examples of different essay types written at varying grade levels helps guide them as they develop their own writing skills. Understanding essay structure and learning techniques from model samples improves students’ abilities to craft organized, coherent, and engaging written pieces. Referring back to these types of essay writing samples is beneficial for students as they progress through primary grades and beyond. With practice and exposure to exemplar essays, students can become confident writers well equipped for academic demands.
