While some variation is normal, most published papers contain the following standard elements in this general order:

Title – The title is brief but precisely describes the research topic. Use unambiguous, descriptive wording maximizing relevance while minimizing technical jargon. The title helps potential readers easily understand the paper’s focus.

Author List – Authors are generally ordered based on their contribution, with the primary contributor listed first. Include authors’ full names and affiliations to give context to their perspective and expertise.

Abstract – The abstract summarizes the full paper concisely, ideally within 250 words or fewer. It presents research context, objectives/questions, methods, main findings/results, and conclusions. The abstract allows readers to quickly grasp the full paper’s essence before reading further.

Keywords – Include 3-10 descriptive keywords not already in the title to aid discoverability in digital searches and databases. Keywords capture the main topics, objects of study, theories, locations, time periods, and methods discussed.

Clearly state the research question or hypothesis being explored through reference to relevant literature. The introduction frames why this research matters.

Literature Review – Summarize and critique the most important previous scholarly works directly related to the research topic and aims. Show how this study builds upon, fits within, or differs from past literature. A review provides necessary context before sharing new research efforts or findings.

Methods – Describe the specific research methods, design, variables, materials, subjects, processes, tools, procedures, techniques, data collection strategies, metrics, theoretical frameworks, statistical analyses, or experiments used. Results – Present the significant new factual data, statistics, or key quantitative or qualitative findings yielded through the study’s methods. Graphs, tables, images, or direct quotes can help explain results more clearly. Do not interpret results here, only report what the study revealed through its methods.

Discussion – Comment on the meaning and implications of the results by relating them back to the literature review and research questions or hypotheses. Address how results help fill knowledge gaps or evaluate theories. Discuss limitations, sources of bias, validity, and reliability as well as directions for future research. Interpret but do not introduce entirely new results.

Conclusion – Concisely summarize the study’s significance and contribution to addressing the research problem or questions. State the main conclusions that can be drawn from the results, avoiding broad generalizations. Suggest practical applications and implications of the research for future work.

References – In-text citations and a corresponding references list should follow the required style guide, typically APA, MLA, Chicago, etc. Provide full publication details for all sources cited. The references show the research’s legitimacy and situate it within a credible scholarly context.

While details may vary by discipline or publication, most research papers contain sections following this general structure at a minimum. Adhering to standards fosters efficient communication and evaluation of new knowledge claims. The predictable format allows readers and referees to focus attention where it matters most – on a study’s substance rather than its outward form. Consistency serves the scholarly mission of advancing established and emerging fields through clear dissemination of carefully-conducted research efforts.
