SPREAD THE LOVE...

When I was first given the assignment to write a reflection on my writing process essay, I knew it would involve considerable brainstorming, planning, drafting, and revising. As an English major in college, I have written dozens of essays over the years and have learned many valuable lessons about developing my writing abilities. This assignment provided me the opportunity to look back on my journey and evaluate how my process for tackling essays has evolved.

The first step I took was to brainstorm the major components I wanted to touch on in my reflection. I created a detailed outline listing points about developing a thesis, conducting research, organizing thoughts, writing drafts, and revising based on feedback. With a clear structure in place, I was ready to begin drafting the essay. Instead of plunging right into writing, I took some additional time to free write and jot down specific experiences related to each outline section. Recalling examples strengthened my recollections and added vivid details I could leverage later.

After free writing, I launched into my first draft while referring to my notes. I focused on laying out the major high-level ideas and establishing coherent flow between paragraphs rather than polishing language or structure. At this early stage, I let my ideas unfurl organically on paper without too much self-editing. Once the initial content was down, I took a break to gain some perspective before diving into revisions. Coming back to my writing later allowed me to catch errors or awkward phrasing that I may have missed during the heat of composing.

For my first revision, I concentrated on tightening up my structure and argument. I reorganized some of the outline sections to strengthen coherence and ensure my thesis served as a strong through-line. Sentences were pruned or combined as needed for clarity and cohesion. Attention shifted to citing sources and properly formatting in-text quotes or paraphrases. References and a works cited list were also added in this round.

Peer feedback from trusted writing tutors was immensely helpful for additional revisions. They helped identify places where supporting details were thin, transitions needed smoothing, or stylistic choices could elevate formal academic tone. Incorporate their thoughtful critique strengthened credibility and rigor of my reflection. With their guidance, I polished word choice, checked flow, and ensured consistency of tense or perspective.

The final revision focused on perfecting smaller elements like parallel structure, variety in sentences lengths, active versus passive voice, and proper formatting per assignment guidelines. Catching microscopic issues at this stage helped bring a level of polish before submission. Making each sentence shine highlighted development of my writing abilities over time through countless assignments and revisions. Proofreading in full one last time identified any remaining questions from readers that required clarification or expansion.

Overall, writing this reflection allowed me meaningful self-reflection on my evolution as a writer during college. I could see growth from shaky first year essays hastily written morning of due dates to current ability crafting layered arguments through meticulous, iterative process as a senior. Gaining this perspective on habits like outlining, seeking feedback, managing time reinforced positive approaches to reinforce and unnecessary ones to shed going forward. Most importantly, revisiting past challenges and triumphs reminds me victories come through small steps each day – whether brainstorming, writing, or revising – to continually sharpen skills as a communicator.
