Writing a research paper is an important skill for middle school students to develop. The research paper allows students to explore a topic they find interesting while building valuable skills like collecting information from credible sources, analyzing facts, and presenting well-reasoned conclusions. While researching and writing can feel overwhelming, breaking the process into smaller steps and following a standardized research paper format makes it much more manageable. The purpose of this article is to explain the typical sections of a research paper and provide a template middle school students can use for their own projects.

To start, students should select a topic that interests them but is also narrow enough to be covered in the scope of a typical middle school research paper. Choosing something too broad like “climate change” may be difficult, while “the impact of deforestation on global warming” provides more focus. Next, students should develop a strong research question about their topic such as “How have reforestation efforts affected carbon levels in the atmosphere?” This question will guide the rest of the paper.

After selecting a topic and research question, students are ready to start researching. A key part of the research paper format is citing source material. While exploring books, articles, and websites, students should take detailed notes and record the publication information for each source so they can give credit later. Often it’s best to start with basic overview articles or websites and then follow links to find more specific sources. Students should aim to use a variety of sources, including at least one book and one article from an academic database. A minimum of five credible sources is standard.

Once sufficient research has been completed, it’s time to start writing the paper. Most standard middle school research paper formats include the following sections:

Introduction: The introduction should pull the reader in and state the main topic and research question. It may include some brief background information and an outline of what will be covered. The introduction is typically 3-5 paragraphs.

Body paragraphs: The body paragraphs will present the findings of the research by discussing sources and themes in more depth. Each new idea or source merits its own paragraph. Body paragraphs are where students analyze and synthesize information to address the research question. Aim for at least 3 body paragraphs but no more than 7-8 paragraphs.

Conclusion: The conclusion restates the research question and summarizes the main points and findings without introducing new information. It leaves the reader with a sense of closure by considering possible implications. A strong conclusion may also suggest areas for future research. The conclusion is typically 1-2 paragraphs.

Works cited page: This final section lists all sources cited in the paper formatted according to the citation style selected (MLA, APA, or Chicago are common for middle school). The works cited page ensures the reader can find the sources easily if they want more information.

Optional additional sections: Some teachers may require other sections like a title page. Students may also choose to include section headings within the body and conclusion for organization. Visual elements like charts or diagrams are also sometimes permitted.

Formatting is also an important part of any research paper. Papers should be typed, double-spaced with 1-inch margins, and use a readable 12-point font like Times New Roman. It’s best to number pages in the top right or bottom center. By adhering to proper research paper structure and formatting guidelines, middle school students can present their work in a clear, professional manner.

Writing a research paper takes time and effort but provides numerous educational benefits for students. Following a standard format makes the process less daunting. With quality research, well-organized thoughts, and correct citations, middle schoolers can feel proud of their finished works. Developing research skills at this stage will serve students well as higher-level demands increase in coming years. The template provided here aims to make research papers accessible for middle schoolers as they learn to succeed with inquiry-based assignments.
