Introduction
Polymers are large molecules composed of many repeating structural units connected by covalent chemical bonds. They are found both naturally as well as can be synthetically manufactured. Polymers play an essential role in day to day life due to their diverse properties and applications. This research paper delves deeper into polymers by covering the main topics of polymer synthesis, characterization techniques, properties, applications and future prospects of polymers.

Polymer Synthesis
Polymers can be naturally occurring or manufactured synthetically. Natural polymers include proteins, DNA etc. Important polymerization reactions which are employed for the synthesis of polymeric materials include:

Addition polymerization: It is a process where the monomers unsaturated bonds become sites for additional monomer units to attach by pairing of electrons. Common polymers synthesized are polythene, polypropylene, nylon, Teflon etc.

Condensation polymerization: In this process, monomers combine through a condensation reaction in which small molecules like water or alcohol are released as byproducts. Examples are polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyurethanes, polyesters, polyamides etc.

Ring opening polymerization: Here cyclic monomers like lactones, oxiranes undergo ring opening reactions in the presence of certain initiators or catalysts to form linear or branched polymer chains. Polylactide is an example.

Free radical polymerization: Monomers having C=C bonds can undergo addition reactions initiated by free radicals leading to vinyl polymers like polystyrene, PVC.

Characterization Techniques
Various techniques are utilized to characterize polymers and determine properties like molecular weight, morphology, chemistry etc. Some important ones are:

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR): Gives information about the polymer structure and identification of functional groups.

Infrared Spectroscopy (IR): Detects bonds present in the polymer chains and is used to identify classes of polymers.

Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC): Determines the molecular weight distribution and average molecular weights of polymers.

Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC): Measures glass transition temperature, melting point giving insight into polymer morphology.

Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA): Determines thermal stability and degradation temperatures of polymers.

X-Ray Diffraction (XRD): Used to study crystalline structure and degree of crystallinity. Amorphous and semicrystalline polymers can be identified.

Properties and Applications
Polymers demonstrate a balance of properties derived from their large molecular size and repeating structure which make them attractive for a plethora of applications. Some important properties and uses are:

Low density plastics like PE, PP, PS etc are tough, non-brittle with good strength-to-weight ratio used in packaging, containers etc.

Nylon finds application in fabrics, fibers due to high tensile strength and resistance to abrasion. Kevlar is an ultra-high strength fiber.

Thermoplastics like PET are recyclable, moldable and used in bottles, films. Thermosets like epoxies, silicones are infusible and used as adhesives, composites.

Elastomers like rubber are flexible and resilient used in tires, tubing, seals. PU foams offer compressibility and are used for cushions, insulation.

Biopolymers like PLA, PHAs have biodegradable properties and applications in biomedical, packaging sectors.

Specialty polymers like PEEK, PTFE have very high heat resistance and chemical inertness used in industrial, biomedical fields.

Future of Polymers
New methods of synthesis like solid-state and high-pressure polymerization is enabling creation of novel polymer structures. Development of stimuli responsive ‘smart’ polymers that can sense and react to external environment is an active area of research.

Biopolymers produced from renewable resources are gaining prominence due to sustainability concerns. Advances in 3D printing and additive manufacturing using specialty polymer resins will foster mass customization. Nanocomposites of polymers reinforced with nanoparticles is an emerging class of materials. Future also holds promise for polymers in energy applications like fuel cells, solar cells, biosensors through ongoing research.

Conclusion
In this research paper, an overview of polymers including synthesis routes, characterization techniques, structure-property relationships, applications as well as future prospects was presented. Polymers have revolutionized industry and daily life through their tunable properties and versatility. Advancements in polymer science will continue to spur development of novel materials contributing significantly to science and technology.
