Doing so makes the referencing process much simpler later on.

The research paper outline should also include a conclusion section. List the major points you want to recap and your intended call to action or final thoughts to wrap up your argument. Leave space below to add new sources or quotes to reference as needed. Google Docs allows you to easily search your document to find references when needed using the search tool.

As you fill out your outline don’t forget to use headings styles to keep things organized. Go to View > Show document outlines to see your outline structure and headings levels at a glance. Your outline should also contain a separate works cited or references page. Insert a new page and center the title “References” or “Works Cited” at the top depending on your style. Then add placeholder citations for each of the sources referenced in your outline using the proper formatting. This makes compiling the final bibliography seamless later on. Don’t forget to consistently cite sources in-text throughout your outline as a reminder of where information came from.
