Little is known about how social media and other online tools are shaping civic attitudes and behaviors among high school students. This proposed study aims to shed light on these important issues through a mixed methods approach.

Research Questions
The overarching research questions guiding this study are:

What factors influence civic engagement among high school students?
In what civic activities are high schoolers involved and how does their involvement vary?
How do formal civic education programs and extracurricular opportunities impact student engagement?
What role do online/social media platforms play in students’ civic lives?

Approach and Methodology
To comprehensively address these research questions, a mixed methods approach will be utilized combining both quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis. First, an anonymous online survey will be administered to a random sample of 500 high school students across 5 public high schools in a mid-sized Midwestern city. The survey will include questions about student demographics, types of civic activities participated in, perceptions of civic importance, exposure to civic learning opportunities, and social media usage.

Second, focus groups will be conducted with 40 students purposefully selected to represent diversity in gender, grade level, and self-reported civic involvement. Focus group discussions will center around exploring themes that emerged from the survey in more depth such as motivations, barriers to engagement, experiences in civic courses and programs, and role of technology. This will provide qualitative contextual understanding to complement the quantitative survey findings.

Third, key informant interviews will be conducted with 10 high school teachers, principals, and community organization leaders involved in civic education programs. Interviews will uncover perceptions of program impacts, challenges, best practices, and ideas for improvements based on experience working directly with students. Document analysis of official data, program materials, and lesson plans will supplement interview insights.

Finally, descriptive and correlational statistical analysis will be performed on the quantitative survey data using SPSS software to identify relationships between civic participation rates and factors like demographics, curricular exposure, and technology usage. Qualitative data from focus groups and interviews will be coded and analyzed for major themes. An interpretive analysis will then integrate both quantitative and qualitative findings to address the original research questions as well as uncover any new insights.

Limitations and Considerations
As with any research, this study has limitations. Generalizability may be limited due to focusing on one specific city and sample size. Student self-reports also introduce potential response bias. A mixed methods approach using multiple data sources helps overcome some limitations of individual methods. Ethical considerations like informed consent, privacy, and minimizing potential risks or discomforts for participants will be addressed through careful human subjects review protocols. Overall, the proposed research aims to provide valuable understanding to help strengthen civic education and participation among youth.
