For example, if writing about the impact of social media on teen depression, you could start with a shocking statistic on increasing depression rates among teens in recent years.
Provide necessary background context. Give the reader just enough information to understand the topic and its significance. Briefly summarize any key theories, historical context, relevant research that has already been done. For a research paper on how technology has changed the workplace, you could give a short overview of how technological advances have impacted different industries over the past few decades.
Clearly state the focus of your research. Directly declare what issue, question or problem your paper will address. Your thesis should be a single, declarative sentence clearly specifying the focus or scope of your research. For example, if studying how smartphones impact sleep, your thesis could be: “This paper will examine the relationship between excessive smartphone usage before bed and decreased sleep quality among college students.”
Preview your argument and main points. Briefly explain the main points or ideas that will support your thesis. Give an overview of how you plan to argue your position and prove your thesis. Acknowledge other viewpoints. Recognize that reasonable people may disagree with your thesis. Show that you understand opposing or alternative arguments exist.
