This advanced academic writing course will cover the process of writing a successful research paper. Students will learn the key components of research papers, best practices for conducting research, organizing an argument, incorporating sources, writing for an academic audience, and revising and editing papers for clarity and quality of writing.
The course will begin with an overview of the purpose and structure of a research paper. Effective research papers require focused topics that can be thoroughly explored within the parameters of the assignment. Students will learn strategies for choosing research topics and formulating focused research questions or thesis statements to guide their work. They will also learn the difference between argumentative and informative research papers and how to tailor their writing for the appropriate style.
Once students have identified their topics, the course will teach methods for effective research. This will include learning to search appropriate library databases and search engines, evaluate the credibility and relevance of sources, and keep detailed research notes. Students will practice search strategies including boolean operators, truncation, phrase searching, and more. They will learn how to create an annotated bibliography to organize sources and record essential information like publication details, summaries, and evaluation of source usefulness. Taking comprehensive research notes is essential for retaining information from sources and including well-supported evidence in papers, so strategies for note taking will also be covered.
Students will then move to outlining and drafting their research papers. Various outlining methods will be explored including topic outlines and sentence outlines. The process of translating outlines into coherent drafts will be examined as well as best practices for integrating research into papers through paraphrasing, summarizing, quoting, and citing sources properly. Students will be introduced to various citation styles like APA, MLA, and Chicago style and learn how to format citations within their texts and create reference pages.
Revising and editing are also significant components of developing high-quality research papers. Students will learn revision strategies including reviewing for clarity, flow, structure, logic, and strength of argument. They will also learn editing techniques like proofreading, using style guides, checking formatting consistency, and having papers reviewed by classmates or the instructor. Techniques like writing abstracts to summarize papers’ key points will also be covered.

They will conduct research, create outlines and drafts, integrate sources, and revise and refine their papers based on feedback.
