This calls for newer approaches to match inventory levels with demand in an efficient manner. Companies also need to manage a diverse inventory including raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods across multiple locations like factories, distribution centers, retail outlets etc. Emerging technologies like Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), blockchain and analytics provide opportunities to improve visibility and optimize inventory decisions. Their adoption varies greatly across industries and companies based on specific needs, resources and maturity of technologies.
Considering these dynamics, this research aims to study how different types of companies across industries like manufacturing, retail, healthcare etc. are tackling inventory management challenges. Research Methodology
To address the above research questions, a comprehensive qualitative research methodology will be adopted involving a literature review and interviews with inventory management experts from diverse industries.
The literature review will examine past studies, reports, articles from secondary sources to understand inventory management evolution, challenges, approaches across sectors. Both academic papers as well as industry reports will be reviewed to get a holistic perspective.
Primary data will be collected through semi-structured interviews with a target of 25-30 professionals holding middle to top level roles in inventory management across various industries like manufacturing, retail, healthcare, CPG etc. Purposive sampling technique will be used to select a mix of large enterprises, SMEs as well as technologically progressive organizations.
Interviews will focus on understanding organizations’ inventory management approaches, technologies used, key trends observed, performance measurement frameworks, challenges faced, best practices, impact of disruptions like COVID, future readiness etc. Detailed notes will be maintained during interviews and later analyzed thematically to identify common patterns.
The insights from literature review and interviews will then be synthesized to address the research questions, draw cross-industry comparisons and develop a framework for future inventory management effectiveness. Sample sizes, areas of discussion may be revised based on data saturation. Data confidentiality and ethical standards will be ensured. The timeline for the study is 12-18 months and findings will be disseminated through research publications and presentations.
