Title: How Does Music Affect Plant Growth?

Introduction
Many scientists have studied how plants respond to their environment. They know that plants need sunlight, water, air and nutrients to grow. But some scientists are trying to learn if music can also affect how plants grow. In this project, I investigated how different types of music impact the growth of beans sprouts. I hypothesized that fast paced, upbeat music would stimulate more rapid growth while slow or calm music could potentially slow growth.

Methodology
I obtained 15 lima beans and planted them in individual pots filled with soil. I watered them daily and made sure they received equal amounts of sunlight by placing them on a sunny windowsill. Once the first sets of leaves began to emerge, I began my music experiment. I separated the bean plants into 3 equal groups. For one week the plants in Group 1 listened to classical music for 1 hour each day. Group 2 heard pop/rock music for 1 hour daily and Group 3 did not hear any music and served as the control group. I used a portable speaker placed near the plants to play the music at a moderate volume that could be heard clearly by the plants but was not overly loud. I measured and recorded the height of each plant’s leaves and stems daily throughout the weeklong experiment.

Results
After 7 days, I compared the growth measurements between the 3 groups. The plants exposed to pop/rock music showed on average 1/4 inch more growth than the control group plants that did not hear any music. The classical music plants grew only about 1/8 inch taller on average than the control group with no music. Therefore, the upbeat pop/rock music seemed to stimulate a little more growth. The differences in growth between all 3 groups were very small. A bar graph clearly shows the pop/rock group had the tallest overall height by a slim margin.

Analysis
The results did not fully support my hypothesis that faster paced music would significantly increase growth more than no music or classical music. While the pop/rock group did grow slightly taller on average, the differences were incredibly minimal. Several factors could account for this. The one hour per day of music exposure may not have been enough time to see dramatic effects. Additionally, the type of soft rock/pop music played may still have not been stimulating enough compared to harder, higher energy styles. The sample size of only 15 plants also limits how much can be concluded. More trials with a larger number of plants are needed to get statistically valid results. Noise from other ambient sounds in the classroom could have interfered as well. Next time, conducting the experiment in a quiet, isolated area may produce clearer results. The difference in temperature, light levels or other environmental variables between the groups could also have impacted outcomes. A better study would ensure all conditions were kept as identical as possible between each group besides just the music variable.

Conclusion
My hypothesis that upbeat music would increase plant growth more so than slower music or no music was only partially supported based on this initial experiment. While the pop/rock music group grew very slightly taller on average, the differences were negligible. More research is still needed to better determine if and how music affects plant growth. Larger sample sizes, isolating just the music variable by keeping all else identical, and exploring a wider range of music genres and volumes could help reveal clearer trends. Continuing to investigate the connection between music and plant responses can further our scientific understanding of how non-human organisms perceive and are impacted by sounds in their environment. Future studies may also look at linking specific hormones, chemicals or physiological plant changes to music exposure. Overall, this was an interesting first attempt but more research is warranted before making conclusions about music’s influence on plant growth.
