Extraversion is commonly considered one of the Big Five personality traits along with agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience (McCrae & Costa, 1987). Trait theory of personality suggests that extraversion involves elevated positive emotionality, sociability, and energy levels that facilitate outward directed interactions. Meanwhile, emotional intelligence refers to an individual’s abilities to perceive, use, understand, and manage emotions in oneself and in relationships with others (Mayer & Salovey, 1997). Despite conceptual links between extraversion and emotional intelligence, there has been limited research exploring the predictive relationship between these constructs. Therefore, the current study aimed to address this gap by examining extraversion as a predictor of overall emotional intelligence and its separate ability-based dimensions.
Literature Review
Trait theory views extraversion as a tendency towards positively valenced behaviors and cognition focused on the external world and engagement with others (Eysenck, 1967). Extraverts display more positive emotional experiences and arousal, are more sociable, assertive, and sensation-seeking compared to introverts (Norris et al., 2018). Psychophysiological research supports biological underpinnings for extraversion involving elevated dopamine and noradrenaline levels in the brain (Depue & Collins, 1999). Emotional intelligence refers to capacities for processing emotional information, both internally and in relationships. Mayer and Salovey (1997) proposed a four branch ability model involving the abilities to perceive emotions accurately, use emotions to facilitate thought, understand complex emotions, and manage emotions strategically. Emotional intelligence abilities predict important social and mental health outcomes including relationship satisfaction, adjustment, and well-being (Schutte et al., 2001).
Prior studies explored links between extraversion and facets of emotional intelligence. For example, extraversion positively correlates with emotional perception skills and managing others’ emotions, but not understanding complex emotions (Van Rooy et al., 2005). Petrides and Furnham (2000) viewed extraversion as an important informant of trait emotional intelligence involving self-reported emotional and social abilities. Only limited studies have tested predictive relationships between extraversion and ability-based models of emotional intelligence using standardized measures. Evidence suggests extraversion may facilitate emotional intelligence through an energetic predisposition towards positively valenced social interactions that provide opportunities to develop emotional processing skills (Austin et al., 2006). Overall, a gap persists in understanding how extraversion forecasts ability-based emotional intelligence as a whole construct and across dimensions.
Hypotheses
Based on the conceptual and empirical literature, this study tested three hypotheses:
H1: Higher extraversion scores will predict significantly higher overall emotional intelligence scores.
H2: Higher extraversion scores will predict significantly higher emotional perception abilities.
H3: Higher extraversion scores will predict significantly higher abilities to manage emotions in relationships.
No specific hypotheses were made regarding the abilities to understand complex emotions or use emotions to facilitate thought since past research did not clearly support predictive relationships with extraversion for these dimensions. The current study aimed to clarify these relationships using standardized measures of extraversion and ability-based emotional intelligence.
Method
Participants and Procedure
Participants included 126 undergraduate psychology students (85 females, 41 males) from a mid-sized public university. The mean age was 19.72 years (SD = 1.23). Participants completed online self-report measures of extraversion and ability-based emotional intelligence as part of a prescreening questionnaire for additional psychology studies. Measures were administered through Qualtrics survey software and took approximately 30 minutes to complete. Participants received course credit for their time.
Measures
Extraversion. Extraversion was assessed using the 8-item subscale from the Big Five Inventory (BFI; John et al., 2008). Sample items include “Is talkative” and “Is outgoing, sociable”. Items are rated on a 5-point Likert scale from 1 (disagree strongly) to 5 (agree strongly). Higher scores indicate greater extraversion. Internal consistency in the current sample was acceptable (α = .84).
Emotional Intelligence. The Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT; Mayer et al., 2002) measured overall emotional intelligence as well as four ability-based branches: 1) Perceiving Emotions, 2) Using Emotions, 3) Understanding Emotions, and 4) Managing Emotions. The MSCEIT provides standardized scores with a mean of 100 and standard deviation of 15. Internal consistencies for the full scale and branches ranged from acceptable to good in the current sample (αs = .78 to .90).
Data Analysis
Preliminary analyses examined reliability and correlations among study variables using SPSS version 26. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses then tested whether extraversion predicted overall emotional intelligence scores as well as scores on each ability branch, after controlling for participant sex in step one. Sex was included as a covariate based on previous research indicating possible gender differences in emotional intelligence (Extremera & Fernández-Berrocal, 2005). Statistical significance was set at p < .05, two-tailed.
Results
Preliminary Analyses
Internal consistencies and correlations among study variables are presented in Table 1. Cronbach's alphas for all measures were acceptable to good, ranging from .78 to .90. Extraversion positively correlated with overall emotional intelligence, r(124) = .21, p = .02, as well as with the Perceiving Emotions, r(124) = .25, p = .004, and Managing Emotions, r(124) = .19, p = .03 branches as expected from hypotheses. There were no significant correlations between extraversion and Using Emotions or Understanding Emotions branches.
Regression Analyses
Hierarchical regression analyses tested predictions that higher extraversion scores would forecast greater emotional intelligence overall and on specific ability dimensions, controlling for sex effects (Table 2). For overall emotional intelligence, step 1 revealed no significant effect of sex, F(1,124) = 2.29, p = .13, R2 = .02. In step 2, extraversion significantly predicted emotional intelligence above sex, ΔF(1,123) = 4.39, p = .04, ΔR2 = .03. Thus, hypothesis 1 was supported.
For the ability branches, step 1 showed no effect of sex on Perceiving Emotions, F(1,124) = 0.06, p = .81, or Managing Emotions, F(1,124) = 0.51, p = .48. Sex approached significance for Using Emotions, F(1,124) = 3.75, p = .06, and significantly predicted Understanding Emotions, F(1,124) = 4.35, p = .04. In step 2, higher extraversion significantly predicted higher Perceiving Emotions, ΔF(1,123) = 6.49, p = .01, ΔR2 = .05, supporting hypothesis 2. Extraversion also significantly predicted greater Managing Emotions abilities above sex, ΔF(1,123) = 3.75, p = .05, ΔR2 = .03, supporting hypothesis 3. Extraversion did not significantly forecast Using Emotions or Understanding Emotions after controlling for sex effects.
