Introduction
The use of social media has grown exponentially among teenagers in recent years. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube have become an integral part of teenage life. Concerns have been raised about the potential negative impacts of excessive social media use on teenage mental health and well-being. This proposed research aims to investigate the relationship between social media engagement and indicators of mental health in teenagers.
Specifically, the research will seek to understand how factors like frequency of use, types of platforms used, time spent on different activities, and social comparisons made online may correlate with feelings of depression, anxiety, loneliness, FOMO (fear of missing out), and decreased life satisfaction in teenagers. Background
Social media provides teens with opportunities to connect with peers and friends, get news and information, and express themselves creatively. Studies have found links between problematic social media use and negative mental health consequences like symptoms of depression, poor body image, cyberbullying, and lack of sleep (Albury, 2015; O’Keeffe & Clarke-Pearson, 2011; Twenge, 2017). Researchers are concerned that comparing themselves to highly curated representations of peers’ lives online can lower teens’ self-esteem and increase feelings of inadequacy (APA, 2017; Jelenchick et al., 2013). The constant connectivity afforded by social platforms may also disrupt teens’ ability to self-reflect and disconnect from social pressures offline (Turkle, 2015). Correlational studies cannot determine causation and the issue is multifaceted, with many individual factors playing a role (Woods & Scott, 2016). There is a need for detailed mixed-method research to better understand the relationship between specific social media behaviors in context and mental health outcomes.

Problem Statement
The problem is that research has yet to comprehensively explore the relationship between different patterns of social media engagement among teenagers and indicators of mental well-being like depression, anxiety, loneliness, and life satisfaction. While studies show associations, the directionality and underlying mechanisms are unclear. A lack of contextually rich, mixed-method research limits the ability of parents, educators and policymakers to promote healthy social media habits and address potential issues. This proposed study aims to address those gaps through a sequential exploratory design, gaining deeper insights to inform guidance, support and policy.

Objectives
The main objectives of the proposed research are:

To quantitatively assess correlations between factors like frequency of social media use, time spent on different activities, number of friends/follows/followers, social comparisons made, and mental health outcomes in a sample of high school students.

To qualitatively explore teenagers’ own perspectives on how social media activities make them feel socially and emotionally, through interviews and photo diaries.

To identify themes around contexts, behaviors and pressures associated with positive versus negative mental health impacts based on the qualitative data.

To determine if qualitative analyses provide explanatory insights into quantitative relationships observed between social media engagement variables and mental well-being indicators.

To draw conclusions and implications for policies, education programs and support services that could help promote teenagers’ healthy and balanced social media use.

Research Questions
The overarching research question is: What is the relationship between patterns of social media engagement and indicators of mental well-being among teenagers?

The specific sub-questions are:

What correlations exist between frequency/time spent on social media, number of social connections, social comparisons, and symptoms of depression, anxiety, loneliness and life satisfaction?

Research Methodology
A sequential exploratory mixed methods design will be used, incorporating quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis. This combines the strengths of each approach while offsetting their limitations (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2011).

Quantitative Phase:

A validated anonymous online survey will be administered to a sample of 300 high school students to measure social media engagement behaviors/habits and symptoms of depression, anxiety, loneliness and life satisfaction using standardized scales.

Descriptive statistics and correlation analyses will identify significant relationships between social media use variables and mental health outcomes.

Qualitative Phase:

12 students will participate in semi-structured individual interviews exploring their lived experiences, perceptions and contexts around social media impacts.

12 students will also photograph and discuss their social media activities/feeds over 1 week using a photo diary method.

Thematic analysis will identify emergent themes from the qualitative data to gain deeper explanatory insights.

Integration:

Quantitative and qualitative results will be integrated during the interpretation phase to explore how qualitative themes provide context to understanding observed correlations. Contradictions will also be considered.

This mixed methods approach combines measurement strengths with rich contextual understanding to address the research questions at both an exploratory and explanatory level. Semi-structured protocols and standardized scales will ensure systematic data collection.

Potential Limitations and Challenges

Causation cannot be determined due to the cross-sectional research design. Longitudinal research is needed.

Participants may feel uneasy disclosing personal experiences, necessitating clear informed consent and research ethics.

Self-report biases are inherent in both quantitative and qualitative data. Objective usage data is not feasible.

Correlational findings cannot determine the direction of effects between variables.

Proposed outcomes and benefits

Valuable pilot mixed methods procedures and lessons learned to facilitate broader scale mixed investigations in diverse cultural settings.

Contributions to the growing evidence base on addressing issues around digital youth wellbeing in an era of advanced technologies.

The proposed research aims to deliver rigorous yet practically meaningful mixed method insights into the complex relationship between social media and adolescent mental health for the benefit of youth, families, education systems and wider society.
