Bobo Doll Experiment
In 1961, Albert Bandura conducted a now-famous study at Stanford University to understand the influence of social modeling on children’s acquisition of novel behaviors (Bandura, Ross, & Ross, 1961). The researchers recruited 72 children between ages 3-6 years from the local nursery school. The children were divided into three groups with equal numbers of boys and girls. Each group witnessed an adult model engaging in either aggressive, nonaggressive, or no behavior with a Bobo doll, which was a plastic clown-like doll that could be made to stand again after being pushed over.
In the aggressive model condition, the adult verbally and physically assaulted the doll by punching, kicking, and hitting it with a hammer while shouting phrases like “Pow!”, “Boom!”, and “Kick him in the head!”. After observation, each child was taken individually into a room containing tempting toys including the Bobo doll and some aggressive items like a mallet and doll. Most importantly, children in the control group who did not observe any adult behaviors engaged in close to zero acts of aggression with the toys. This lack of difference between control and nonaggressive groups strongly supported the idea that the children’s aggressive behaviors were specifically learned from observing the adult model rather than from some other source.
In short, observational learning allowed children to acquire novel aggressive responses by merely watching rather than directly experiencing negative reinforcement contingencies. This was powerful evidence for behavior acquisition through modeling rather than reinforcement alone.
