Overnutrition, including increased food intake and decreased physical activity, is a leading preventable cause of obesity. In the United States, prevalence of obesity is exceptionally high. As of 2021, over 42% of American adults were obese, with the national obesity rate having tripled since the 1970s (CDC, 2022). Obesity increases the risk of various diseases and health conditions that decrease both the quality and length of life. Some of the most significant diseases associated with obesity include cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.
