Seventh Grade Science Fair Background Research Paper: Testing the Effect of Different Variables on Plant Growth

Different light intensities also impact growth, with most plants demonstrating optimal growth under moderate light and stunted growth in very low or very high light conditions (Smith, 1982). Water
Access to sufficient water is also critical for healthy plant growth (Taiz & Zeiger, 2010). Experiments have shown that water stress slows plant growth and reduces biomass accumulation compared to plants receiving adequate water (Zwieniecki et al., 2002). Too much water can also stunt plant development by reducing oxygen levels in the soil (Williams & Viegas, 1991). Most plants demonstrate optimal growth when soil moisture is maintained at a level neither too wet nor too dry.

Soil Nutrients
The nutrients contained in soil are essential building blocks that plants need to grow. Key nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are critical components of nucleic acids, proteins, and cell membranes in plants (Williams & Viegas, 1991). Multiple studies have found that inadequate levels of these essential nutrients hamper growth and photosynthesis (Chapin, 1980; Koide, 1991). Conversely, high amounts of nutrients can be toxic to plants. In general, plant growth is maximized when soil nutrients are continuously available in moderate amounts (Chapin, 1980). The specific balance of nutrients required differs depending on the plant.

Temperature
Plant growth is sensitive to temperature variations. All biochemical and physiological processes in plants, including photosynthesis and nutrient uptake, have optimal temperature ranges (Taiz & Zeiger, 2010). Generally, moderate temperatures around 20-30°C promote the fastest growth in most plants, while very high or very low temperatures slow growth rates (Huxman & Smith, 2001; Loveys et al., 2002). For example, temperatures below 15°C or above 35°C have been found to reduce plant growth and photosynthesis in studies (Huxman & Smith, 2001). Temperature fluctuations beyond the normal daily or seasonal fluctuations can negatively impact plant development (Francis & Rowarth, 2007; Loveys et al., 2002). Plant species have adapted to grow best within characteristic temperature zones.

Hypothesis
Based on my literature review of past research, I believe the four variables of light, water, soil nutrients, and temperature will all impact the growth of radish plants in my science fair experiment. Specifically, I hypothesize that:

Radish plants receiving eight hours of direct sunlight per day will grow taller and have more biomass than plants receiving only four hours of sunlight.

Radish plants watered every other day will show stunted growth compared to plants watered daily.

Radish plants grown in potting soil amended with recommended amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizer will demonstrate more vigorous growth than plants grown in unfertilized potting soil.

Radish plants grown at an average daily temperature of 25°C will exhibit faster growth than plants maintained at 15°C or 35°C.

I plan to test these hypotheses by growing radish plants under controlled experimental conditions while systematically varying the levels of each factor. I will then quantitatively measure and compare plant heights, leaf areas, fresh weights, and dry weights to see how growth is impacted. Documenting the results could provide valuable insights into optimizing radish production and give a better understanding of how changing environmental conditions affect plant biology.
