This timing requires a quick writing pace, so students should have a strategy for crafting their response efficiently yet thoughtfully. A common structure includes an introductory paragraph with a thesis statement summarizing the analysis, 2-3 body paragraphs for the analysis and evaluation sections, and a concluding paragraph that restates the thesis. Students should aim to write at least three substantive paragraphs of well-developed analysis and evaluation.

Essays demonstrating mastery will analyze how reasoning and evidence in the passage supports the author’s conclusions. Strong responses will also provide a fair and balanced evaluation of the argument’s effectiveness by considering other perspectives or potential weaknesses in the logic or assumptions. Writing should be clear, organized, and demonstrate critical thinking through specific examples and references to the given passage. Successful essays avoid simple summary and personal opinion in favor of focusing on the analysis task described in the directions.
