Introduction
Technical writing is a form of written communication that focuses on clarity, accuracy and completeness to convey technical information about processes or concepts. As an aspiring technical writer, understanding the fundamentals of technical writing and applying them effectively is essential for my career success and growth. In this essay, I will provide an overview of my technical writing background and skills, discuss some projects I have worked on and lessons learned, and outline my future goals in this field.
Education and Training
I graduated from State University in 2019 with a Bachelor of Science in Technical Communication. During my undergraduate studies, I took a variety of technical writing and communication courses that provided a solid foundation in technical writing principles and practices. Some of the key courses I took include:
Technical Writing: This introductory course covered the core elements of technical writing such as developing clear objectives, conducting research, drafting and structuring documents, using precise language, and applying formats and styles. We analyzed and wrote various technical documents including definitions, descriptions, instructions, proposals, and reports.
Usability and User Experience: This course focused on user-centered design principles and evaluating usability in technical documentation. We learned how to conduct user research such as surveys and usability tests to understand target audiences and identify areas for improvement.
Information Design: Information design principles like visual hierarchy, organization of content, and formatting were emphasized. Students learned how to design layouts, tables, charts, diagrams and other visual elements to effectively communicate technical information.
Documentation Project Management: This capstone course provided experience managing an end-to-end documentation project from requirements gathering to deliverables. Skills like developing project plans, collaborating with stakeholders, and ensuring quality control were practiced.
In addition to these technical communication courses, I also took technical courses in computer science, engineering and mathematics to expand my subject matter expertise. After graduating, I continued developing my technical writing skills through online courses on technical editing, content strategy and structured authoring.
Work Experience
My first job after college was as a Technical Writer at Anthropic, an AI safety startup. Some of my key responsibilities and accomplishments included:
Authored API documentation and tutorials for Anthropic’s constitutional AI platform. This involved analyzing the product, formatting content according to style guidelines, and testing examples.
Created and published knowledge base articles, white papers, case studies and guides to help potential customers understand the benefits of constitutional AI.
Performed content audits to identify gaps, inconsistencies and areas for improvement. Proposed and implemented enhancements to documentation workflows, templates and review processes.
Collaborated closely with engineers and product managers to gather requirements, ensure terminology and examples were accurate, and answer technical queries from clients.
Organized quarterly documentation sprints to systematically improve coverage of new features and functionality. Contributed to over 30% growth in page views through these efforts.
After a year, I transitioned to a Technical Writer role at Anthropic to focus more on platform APIs and developer tools. Here, I:

While I am still relatively early in my technical writing career, I have some clear goals for my continued learning and professional growth:
Become an expert in my company’s domain by regularly auditing products and codebases to deepen my subject matter expertise in AI safety and constitutional AI technologies.
Pursue technical editing and information architecture certifications to expand my skillset. The Certified Professional Content Manager and Editor certifications from the Content Marketing Institute are of particular interest.
Further develop my technical skills in structured authoring and markup languages like DITA, Markdown and AsciiDoc to produce high-quality information for different delivery channels.
Gain project management experience by taking on more leadership responsibilities like estimating documentation work, facilitating collaborations with cross-functional teams and reporting progress.
Contribute to the technical communication field through publishing blog posts, tutorials and research papers. Sharing knowledge is important for advancing the profession and networking within the industry.
Maintain an active online presence on technical writing forums and participate in local user groups/conferences to stay on top of trends, network with professionals and explore new specializations like UX writing.
Consider pursuing a Master’s degree part-time in information architecture, human-computer interaction or a related technical field to deepen my qualification profile over the long run.
Overall, I am passionate about continuously improving my technical writing expertise to effectively partner with engineers and product teams, represent complex subjects clearly for diverse audiences, and help drive innovations that positively impact society through my work.
