In addition to classroom learning, I have gained invaluable practical experience through two technical writing internships. My first internship was with an engineering consulting firm where I assisted engineers and subject matter experts with generating proposals, reports, manuals and specifications for various industrial and municipal infrastructure projects. This exposed me to technical documentation across multiple engineering disciplines like civil, mechanical and structural. I learned how to collect and synthesize technical information from various SMEs, conduct user research and usability testing, iterate documentation based on feedback, and ensure all deliverables met client needs and industry standards.
My current internship is with a medical device startup where I am the primary technical writer spearheading end-user documentation for a new surgical robotics platform. In this role, I have full ownership over multiple deliverables from initial planning and outlining to final publication. I work closely with designers, engineers and clinical specialists to thoroughly understand the underlying technologies, intended uses and safety/regulatory requirements. Then I translate this specialized information into comprehensive user manuals, quick start guides, maintenance/troubleshooting instructions and training materials using clear writing, effective organization, illustrations and other visual aids. I also conduct user testing on prototype documents and implement needed changes prior to product launch based on feedback.
This hands-on experience has given me invaluable insights into the entire technical writing process from different stages of product development. I have sharpened my skills in requirements gathering, content development, document design, and feedback incorporation. I have also learned the importance of project management, collaboration, and adapting communications based on intended audiences which may include technical specialists as well as non-technical end users. Both internships confirmed my passion for technical communication and provided concrete work samples to include in my portfolio.
Beyond academic and work experience, I have further developed my technical writing skills through independent learning projects. For example, to enhance my knowledge of web accessibility guidelines, I wrote a detailed set of instructions for making a basic website WCAG compliant. I followed best practices for inclusive design and created a multi-modal document tailored for both developers and non-technical stakeholders. I also frequently volunteer as a technical editor for an open source software documentation project to stay current with emerging technologies and contribute to an important knowledge base.
