There are several different types of essays that are commonly assigned to students. Most essays generally fall into one of four main categories: narrative, descriptive, expository, or persuasive. Within each of these categories, there are also several different subtypes of essays. Let’s take a deeper look at each of the main essay types and some of their subtypes.
The narrative essay is one that tells a story. There are generally two subtypes of narrative essays: autobiographical and fictional. An autobiographical narrative essay relates an event or time from the author’s own life and experiences. This allows the author to tell a personal story in their own voice. A fictional narrative essay uses imagination to develop a fictional story similar to what one finds in short stories and novels. The author draws on descriptive details and events to chronicle what happens in the story. Both autobiographical and fictional narrative essays have a clear beginning, middle, and end, with events told chronologically.
Descriptive essays aim to use vivid details to describe and explore a person, place, object, experience, situation, emotion, or event. The goal is to engage the reader’s senses by using details, examples, and anecdotes to help them visualize or experience what is being described. There are several common subtypes of descriptive essays including place, person, object, experience, emotion/feeling, or situation/event. For example, a descriptive essay about a place might focus on describing a location like a beach, forest, or city. A descriptive essay about an emotion could explore what anger, happiness, sadness, or other feelings really feel like.
Expository essays explain or inform the reader about various topics. Expository essays are commonly assigned to students because they are the most flexible type and can cover a wide range of topics. There are several subtypes of expository essays including: process, comparison/contrast, categories, definition, and cause/effect. For example, a process expository essay would explain step-by-step how to do or make something like cook a meal, complete an activity, solve a problem, etc. A compare/contrast expository essay analyzes the similarities and differences between two or more subjects. A definition expository essay would clearly define and explore the meaning of a term, concept, process, or other topic.
Persuasive essays aim to convince the reader that the author’s position on an issue, idea, or topic is valid or reasonable using logic and evidence. There are different subtypes of persuasive essays depending on what action or belief change the essay ultimately wants the reader to adopt. Common persuasive essay subtypes include: argumentative, debate, rationale or justification, proposal or recommendation, and cause-and-effect. An argumentative persuasive essay would take a clearly defined position on a debatable issue and present well-supported logical reasons and evidence to convince the reader to agree with that position. A proposal or recommendation essay would suggest a course of action, idea or solution and argue in favor of adopting or implementing it. Regardless of subtype, a strong, well-written persuasive essay requires rational, facts-based logic and compelling support.
In addition to fitting into one of the four main essay categories and selecting a focused subtype, other important elements of an effective essay include a clear thesis statement, well-organized supporting body paragraphs, transitions between ideas, and a coherent conclusion. Essays often require not only in-depth content knowledge about the selected topic but also research skills to identify credible sources to integrate and cite. Being aware of the various essay types and purposefully selecting the most appropriate one for a given writing prompt or assignment can help students deliver a strong, unified, and organized written response. Understanding essay structure and the basic elements involved in crafting well-developed essays across different subtypes serves as an important foundation for academic writing expectations and success.
