When writing a research paper, it is important that you properly cite any information or ideas that are not your own. Failing to cite sources or incorrectly citing sources can be considered plagiarism, which is a serious academic offense that can have consequences like losing points on an assignment or even expulsion from your university. As you conduct research and write your paper, here are some key things you must cite:
Direct Quotes: Any verbatim words taken directly from a source must be enclosed in quotation marks and cited. This includes not just full sentences but also phrases or even single important terms pulled word-for-word from another source. When directly quoting a source, you must include the author’s last name, year of publication, and page number in your in-text citation. For example: (Smith, 2020, p. 15).
Paraphrased Ideas: Even if you rephrase another source’s ideas or findings in your own words, you still need to cite the original source for that concept. Simply changing around the wording does not make an idea your own. Any facts, statistics, analyses or conclusions that are not common knowledge within your field must be cited, regardless if they are directly quoted or paraphrased.
Information From Interviews: If you conduct interviews with experts or other people as part of your research, any specific information or insights obtained during those interviews must also be cited. This includes directly quoting interview subjects as well as paraphrasing or summarizing what they told you. You need to cite their name, affiliation, and date of interview within your paper.
Data/Statistics: Raw data, survey results, empirical findings reported in other sources must always be credited to the original researchers or organizations that conducted the work, even if presented in your own tables or figures. Any numerical evidence utilized in your paper must be cited.
Images/Media: If you include photos, maps, charts, graphs or other visual content drawn directly from other sources, they require proper citation within the caption or text near the graphic. Simply stating “Source: (author)” is not sufficient academic citation – you need complete publication details.
Published Studies and Theories: You must cite the source for any studies, experiments or established theories that you summarize or discuss in your paper. Even foundational theories or “common knowledge” scientific findings need to be referenced at least once to give credit to their original authors.
Ideas Influenced by Others: If your paper was significantly informed by the perspectives or methodologies of particular scholars during your research process, you need to acknowledge those influences even if you are not directly quoting or paraphrasing them. Putting others’ works in context is important.
Any Time You Consult Outside Sources: In general, anytime you consult an outside source – whether it is directly utilized or just consulted for background information – you need to have it included in your bibliography or references list at the end of the paper to allow your readers to easily fact-check your work or explore the topics further. Failure to properly list all consulted sources, even if not directly cited in-text, can still constitute plagiarism.
When writing a research paper you must cite each source that your content draws from in order to avoid plagiarism and give credit to others’ works and ideas. Follow your academic discipline’s standard citation style guide (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.) consistently throughout your paper. Proper citation allows your reader to easily evaluate the validity and credibility of your evidence and analysis.
