Typically, researchers will outline their sampling technique in the “Method” section of a paper. The Method section provides step-by-step details on how the study was conducted so readers understand precisely what procedures were followed. This allows others to evaluate and potentially replicate the research. Describing the sampling technique is an essential piece of information for readers to judge the credibility and rigor of the research process.
There are two main places within the Method section where researchers commonly report the sampling technique:
Participant/Subject Selection
The first paragraph or section of the Method typically describes who participated in the study. Here, researchers specify the target population they aimed to generalize findings to. They also explain inclusion/exclusion criteria for participants. This is the logical place to insert details on sampling. Some papers include a separate Procedure subsection after Participant Selection. Here, the exact steps taken to conduct the study are outlined chronologically. Or “To select households for the survey, researchers first obtained street maps and divided neighborhoods into segments of 10 houses each. Then, a random starting point was chosen for the first household to be surveyed in each segment using a random number table.”
The sampling technique description should include several key pieces of information:
Type of sampling method used (e.g. simple random, stratified, cluster, systematic, etc.)
How the sampling frame was defined/obtained (e.g. student directory, census data, consumer panel, etc.)
Exact procedure for selecting participants (e.g. random number table, computer program, every 5th name on list, etc.)
Desired sample size and how this was determined
Any deviations from the planned sampling methodology
Non-response rates or issues that affected the final sample
Besides Participant Selection and Procedure, some researchers also summarize the sampling method briefly in the Introduction section to foreshadow the methodology. The Method section provides the most important and detailed explanation.
Another relevant place the sampling technique may be described is in the Limitations/Delimitations subsection of the Discussion section. Here, researchers acknowledge weaknesses in their design or issues that may impact generalizability. For example, they may note that using a convenience sample of volunteers introduces self-selection bias. Or they disclose the sample frame excluded particular subgroups, limiting inferences. Researchers have several good options for locating the sampling technique details within a research paper. But the Method section generally remains the central and most expected location. Clearly specifying the approach allows readers to properly judge scientific rigor and place appropriate weights on findings. Omitting or vaguely defining the sampling method risks compromising validity and hindering critical assessment of evidence. Including rich descriptions of how participants came to be involved aids transparency and replication of the research process.
