Writing a research paper in APA style requires adherence to strict guidelines. Many students struggle with APA style guidelines when writing their research papers, assignments and academic works. With the right guidance and understanding of the format requirements, writing in APA style can become much easier. This article will provide a comprehensive guide on how to write in APA style for research papers and assignments.

The first part of writing in APA style is formatting your document. All papers in APA style should be double-spaced, use 12-point Times New Roman or similar fonts, have 1-inch margins all around, and be left-aligned. The entire paper should be written in paragraph form with no extra spaces between paragraphs, except for when beginning a new section or chapter. Page numbers should be inserted in the top right corner, 0.5 inches from the top and flushed right.

The second important part of APA formatting is structuring your paper. All APA style papers should have four major sections – the title page, abstract, main body, and references. The title page should include the title of the paper centered in the middle of the page, your name and institutional affiliation below the title. The page number “1” should be included on the top right corner of the title page. The abstract page should have the title “Abstract” centered at the top without any other formatting. The abstract should briefly summarize the key points of your research in 120-150 words.

The main body is where your actual research paper content and discussion is presented. The main body should begin on a new page after the abstract page. The first text on the page should be the centered, bolded and title case title of the paper. The body text begins after one double-spaced line below the title. All headings used in APA format follow specific formatting standards. The main body should have no extra spacing between paragraphs except when beginning a new section. Section headings are bolded and title case. Subsection headings are bolded with only the first letter in uppercase. Indent all subsections 5-7 spaces. And references alphabetically at the end of the paper.

In terms of in-text citations, APA style follows an author-date style of referencing. All sources that are cited in the text must appear in the reference list. In-text citations include the author’s last name and year of publication within parentheses. For example: (Smith, 2020). When directly quoting from a source, include the page number in the citation as well: (Smith, 2020, p. 42). For sources with 3-5 authors, cite all authors the first time then use “et al.” in subsequent citations. For sources with 6 or more authors, use the first author’s name followed by “et al.” every time the source is cited.

For references or citations listed at the end of the paper, APA style uses a hanging indent format. The reference list should be on its own page at the end of the paper. The word “References” should appear centered and in bold at the top of the page. All references are listed in alphabetical order by authors’ last name. The first line for each reference is flush left while subsequent lines are indented five spaces. Book references include the author’s name, publication year, book title (in italics), publication city and name. Journal article references include the author’s name, publication year, article title, journal title (in italics), volume number, issue number, and page range.
