When providing context, don’t just list out facts – synthesize the information and discuss how different elements relate to one another. Two to three concise sentences usually suffice to adequately situate your reader.

After drawing the reader in and establishing context, state your thesis statement. The thesis is the central argument or key point you will prove in the essay. An effective thesis is specific, debatable, and outlines the overall direction of your argument. The final part of your introduction previews your main points that will support your thesis argument. You don’t need to go into extensive detail, but give your reader a roadmap by briefly stating the two or three main examples, reasons, or ideas you will cover in your body paragraphs. For instance, to continue the immigration example, you may preview that the following points will be discussed: “This essay will explore how immigration strengthens the economy through job creation and spending, how many immigrants fill essential roles, and the social and economic benefits of earned citizenship.”

When crafting your introduction, keep it concise yet compelling. You don’t want to bury the key elements like your thesis, but nor should lengthy backstory overwhelm your opening. Typically, an effective introduction is 3 to 5 well-written sentences, though there is some flexibility depending on your essay’s specific requirements or discipline. Introductions that directly answer the essay’s assigned prompt tend to be most successful in focusing the reader’s attention on your argument.

Once you have an initial draft introduction, review it using the following checklist:

Is relevant background context and terminology clearly established?

The introduction is the first impression – so crafting a solid opening lays the foundation for an effective overall essay.
