Writing content for responsive design requires extra consideration beyond traditional web content development. With responsive design, a single website is intended to render well across a wide range of screen sizes from mobile phones to desktop computers. This means content needs to be flexible and adaptable while still ensuring the user has a good experience no matter the device. Some key things to keep in mind when writing for responsive design include:

Prioritize important information: With limited screen real estate on small devices, prioritize including the core message, value proposition or key facts in the content above other details. Content written for responsive design leads with what is most critical for the user to know first. Less important information can then be placed lower down the page or hidden away initially with responsive toggles or menus.

Use heading structure judiciously: Headings like

,

etc are important for semantics and screen reader use but can take up valuable vertical space on mobile. Only use them if truly needed to divide logical sections. For short content blocks, avoid sub-headings if they do not meaningfully segment information.

Optimize paragraph length: Long blocks of text will be challenging to read on small screens. Break content into shorter, skimmable paragraphs of ideally 3-5 sentences each. Consider using responsive typography techniques to fluidly resize text for comfort across devices.

Include targeting multimedia: Images, video and other media are great for content but consume lots of bandwidth and screen real estate if not optimized. Use responsive image techniques like srcset/sizes to serve the right sized image per device. For video, provide both an embedded player and a compressed mp4 file for quick loading. Consider progressive enhancement by only including multimedia on larger screens when possible.

Design for touch: On mobile, users primarily consume content via touch interactions not mice. Write for fingertips by ensuring important calls-to-action like buttons are large and spaced sufficiently apart. Use big, blocky text for easy readability on small high resolution screens. Avoid tiny hit areas unfriendly to touch screens.

Structure content conditionally: Not all content is equally relevant on every screen size. Use responsive techniques like CSS media queries to show/hide or restructure certain pieces of content based on viewport widths. This keeps the core value front and center while allowing flexibility.

Progressive disclosure: To reduce scrolling, only reveal portions of long form content as needed through toggles, infinite scrolling or reveal on scroll effects. Provide signposts to signal there is more information below the initial viewport without overwhelming upfront.

Prioritize above-the-fold content: With limited initial views on mobile, the top content users see without scrolling down is vitally important. Write the introduction and first content blocks to independently convey the key message on their own in case someone doesn’t scroll further. Beyond the initial viewport content should smoothly flow downwards.

Use concise, scannable writing: Due to limited attention spans and frequent interruptions on small screens, prose for mobile tends to be best when written in a clear, scannable manner. Short sentences, active voice and common words aid comprehension vs complex, lengthy constructs better for longform content.

Optimize for search and social sharing: Include relevant keywords and short, compelling snippets in the first paragraph and page tags. Write enticing subject lines and calls-to-action to encourage sharing of optimized mobile content on social platforms.

Add interactivity where possible: For engagement, incorporate interactive elements like quizzes, feedback forms, comment sections optimally using progressive enhancement. However avoid overloading pages with unnecessary distractions for a clean focused reading experience on small screens first.

Writing content for responsive designs requires intentional structuring, prioritization and adaptation of information for consumption across contexts. The goal is delivering value to users no matter the device, with well-organized, scannable yet compelling copy designed for comprehension on any screen size. With some extra planning during the content creation process, writers can develop fully responsive and adaptable web materials.
