SPREAD THE LOVE...

Writing your first research paper can seem like an intimidating task, but if you take it one step at a time and allot plenty of time to research and write, it will become much more manageable. The research process takes time, so start early and build in pacing to spread the work out over several weeks if possible. Here are some tips to help make writing your first research paper a successful experience:

Pick a topic. The first step is choosing a topic that interests you and is feasible to research within the time constraints. Talk to your professor about potential topic ideas to see if any fit within the scope and focus of the class. You want something that has enough available research sources but isn’t too broad.

Develop research questions. Once you have a topic area, develop open-ended research questions that can guide your investigation into the topic. Be sure the questions relate back to the original topic. Having clear research questions will help focus your research efforts.

Find research sources. Now it’s time to start locating credible sources to answer your research questions. Visit your library databases and search tools to find books, academic journal articles, and credible websites. Concentrate on finding a variety of both current and historical sources, both primary and secondary. Take thorough notes as you research and record complete bibliographic information.

Create an outline. Before writing the paper itself, create a detailed outline to organize your sources and thoughts. The outline will serve as a roadmap as you write. Include the introduction, thesis statement, main topic areas or arguments corresponding to research questions, and a conclusion section. This is the time to start developing your main thesis or argument.

Write the paper. Start writing! The introduction section should introduce the topic, provide necessary context and background, and present the clearly stated thesis. Develop body paragraphs around each research question, using sources to support the points made. Tie everything together with a conclusion section that restates the thesis and summarizes key findings.

Format properly. Be sure to follow your instructor’s specified formatting guidelines, whether MLA, APA, Chicago or other styles. This includes proper in-text citations and a complete works cited or references page. Pay attention to elements like font style, size, margins, headers, pagination and more.

Proofread carefully. Set the paper aside for a day or two before proofreading and editing. Come back to it with fresh eyes to catch any errors or areas needing improvement. Have a peer review it as well. Check for proper citations, grammar, complete and cohesive flow of information, and adherence to formatting guidelines.

Turn it in! Have a final review and when you are satisfied, submit your research paper. Be sure to keep an electronic copy for yourself as well. With time spent on thorough research and organization, writing your first research paper can produce an excellent final work to be proud of. The skills learned will carry through to future papers as well.
