The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) located in Bengaluru, India has been at the forefront of educating students and conducting research for over 100 years since its establishment in 1909. One of the flagship activities regularly conducted by IISc to train students in research skills is the writing research paper workshop.

As research and the ability to write research papers effectively is a core requirement for students pursuing graduate studies such as M.Tech, MS, and PhD programs, IISc conducts intensive writing research paper workshops lasting 3-5 days. The workshop is open for students from IISc as well as other academic institutions across India.

The objective of the writing research paper workshop is to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of the various components involved in writing a research paper and conducting scientific research. By the end of the workshop, students should be able to develop manuscripts independently and confidently submit their work for publication in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.

Some of the key aspects covered in the IISc research paper writing workshop include:

Understanding the structure and format of a research paper: Students are familiarised with the typical sections of a research paper such as introduction, literature review, methodology, results and analysis, conclusions, and future work. Parameters such as paper length, font styles, in-text citations, and references are also covered.

Developing the introduction: Workshops include detailed sessions on writing an engaging introduction that provides an overview of the research problem/objectives and places it in the relevant context and gap in existing literature. Introductions should draw the attention of readers and convince them of the need to read further.

Conducting literature review: This section involves comprehensive training on identifying and procuring relevant previous work related to the research topic through library databases and search engines. The process of critical analysis and synthesis of literature to identify common threads and gaps is explained.

Explaining methodology: Trainees are taught how to clearly describe the methodology, tools, experiments, simulations, or theoretical formulations used to achieve research objectives. Sufficient details must be provided to enable reproducibility. Ethical concerns if any must also be addressed.

Presenting results: Best practices of generating, collecting, organising and presenting results in a clear, precise yet concise manner through tables, plots, diagrams, etc. are shared. Interpretation and analysis to demonstrate how results answer research questions is focused on.

Drawing conclusions: Guidance is given on linking results back to the objectives, summarising major outcomes, limitations of the study, and providing future recommendations based on conclusions. Speculation should be avoided and claims backed by empirical evidence.

Formatting and style guidelines: Workshops ensure adherence to formatting styles prescribed by journals or conferences of interest. Aspects such as in-text citations, reference lists, page layout, section headings are standardized.

Peer review process: An overview of the double-blind peer review system followed by most reputed publicationchannels is provided. Criteria based on which manuscripts are evaluated for technical merit, originality, clarity, etc. are discussed.

Manuscript writing: Hands-on sessions allow students to outline a draft research paper on their own work under the supervisionof workshop mentors. Iterative reviews and feedback aids in improving the drafts.

Oral presentation: Effective strategies for presenting posters or talking about one’s research in conferences through clear structure and visual aids are imparted.

Publication strategy: Students learn approaches to identify suitable journals/conferences, understand editor guidelines, write effective cover letters along with tips to handle reviews and resubmissions.

Research ethics and plagiarism: Important aspects like obtaining necessary approvals, citing work of others appropriately, avoiding self-plagiarism are deliberated upon. Significance of research ethics is highlighted.

Time and project management: Skills related to allocating optimum time for research activities, prioritization, record-keeping, reporting progress are also part of the curriculum.

Workshops generally have a strength of 30-40 participants to enable sufficient interactions and mentoring. In addition to lectures, there are peer-learning opportunities through group presentations and discussions. Feedback from published authors who are workshop mentors helps clarify various doubts. Supplementary reading material encompassing manuscript examples, formatting templates, self-assessment rubrics are provided.

At the end of the IISc research paper writing workshop, students take an evaluation consisting of short questions to assess knowledge acquisition. Based on qualitative and quantitative feedback, the workshop is regularly updated by incorporating new techniques and case studies. It has proven highly useful for students to publish their work more effectively post completion of their degree programs. Overall, the workshop plays a defining role in nurturing a research culture and advancing science.
