SPREAD THE LOVE...

Hope is a small flicker of light in an otherwise dark world. It gives us purpose when we have none and motivation when we feel lost. As humans, we all experience times of darkness – moments when challenges overcome us and despair threatens to consume our souls. It is in these lowest of lows that hope shows its true strength, guiding us back to the light and reminding us of our innate ability to overcome any obstacle.

I know hope’s powerful resilience well, as there have been many trials in my life that have tried to extinguish its flame. The death of my father when I was just a child left me feeling hopeless, like the darkness would never end. But hope persisted, reminding me through my mother’s unwavering smile and my siblings’ playfulness that love and joy would see us through our grief. As a teenager, self-doubt plagued me and I struggled to find my place in the world. But hope guided me to pursue my passions for writing and music, showing me that I had gifts to share, even if I didn’t see them yet.

In my early twenties, a devastating breakup shattered my sense of self and convinced me I would never love or be loved again. I’m sure many have felt that crushing weight of hopelessness when a relationship ends – as if the walls are closing in and you’ll be trapped in an endless cycle of sorrow. But hope came knocking at my door once more, this time in the form of good friends who refused to let me wallow and instead distracted me with laughter and adventures until, bit by bit, I started to feel like myself again. Their constant encouragement reminded me that heartbreak, though painful, was not permanent and that better days were ahead.

My most immense test of hope came a few years later when I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the young age of 26. The shocking news was paralyzing and sent me spiraling into a deep pit of despair. Surely, this was it – cancer had come to snuff out whatever light remained inside of me. But hope has an ingenious way of inserting itself even in our darkest moments of medical crisis. It came in the caring touch of my partner as he held my hand through biopsy results and countless doctor visits. It was fueled by family and friends who rallied around me with meals, letters, and persistent check-ins to ensure I never felt alone.

Hope blossomed further through my cancer support group, where I found comfort in sharing stories with others also facing the disease. Their determination in the face of fear gave me strength. Most significantly, hope manifested through modern medicine – the dedicated doctors, nurses, and researchers who poured their lives into finding a cure. Through aggressive treatment, I was declared cancer-free, and it was hope alone that carried me through those grueling months of chemotherapy and surgery. It kept whispering that this battle could be won and that a future still awaited me on the other side of treatment.

Five years later, I am living proof of hope’s perseverance. Not only did it ensure my survival, but it has given me a renewed zest for life that I didn’t have before my diagnosis. Every morning is a gift and every day an opportunity to appreciate small joys. In the aftermath of cancer, I discovered a passion for health advocacy, volunteering my time to raise funds and spread awareness about the disease. This purpose has become my mission and a way to channel all the hope that was placed in me into helping others still fighting for survival. I’ve even met other young adults who were motivated to keep dreaming of a cure because of my story. There is truly no greater purpose than passing hope from one person to another.

While hope succeeded in pulling me from darkness’ grasp time and time again, I don’t believe its impact ends with my own life. Each experience of overcoming has gifted me insightful lessons on hope’s indomitable power to transform suffering into strength, victims into victors, and brokenness into wholeness. My experiences have taught me that no matter how deep the wound or heavy the burden, hope can revive even the coldest of hearts and most damaged of souls. It ignites within us a fire to survive and thrive despite circumstance. And through surviving and sharing one’s story, hope is contagious – it spreads from person to person, community to community, and generation to generation until all have tasted of its light.

That is hope’s greatest triumph – its ability to kindle renewed dreams in those resigned to darkness and light new fires in even the chilliest of climates. It breathes life into lifeless scenarios and reconstructs beauty from barren places. By its design, hope lives on in the stories that move us and the examples that inspire us to keep putting one foot in front of the other during our rockiest passages. Therein lies its immortality – it is immortalized through the lives it touches and transformed through the lessons left behind. Hope’s flame will burn forever so long as humanity exists to pass it between palms outstretched in fellowship. And so I aim to nurture and share it by speaking of darkness overcome until all have heard whispers of a brighter tomorrow.

In the end, hope is the universal language we all understand, regardless of nation, creed or color. We have all known pain and suffering, and we all crave purpose, meaning and reassurance that our struggles won’t be in vain. Hope provides the balm to soothe our deepest wounds and the light to guide us out of whichever pit we currently find ourselves in. It reminds the lost that home awaits and the broken that wholeness can be reclaimed. Most of all, hope whispers to our inmost selves that no matter how deep we’ve fallen or how lonely the fight seems – we are never, ever alone. For hope lives on in each beating heart that refuses to surrender and in every small act of kindness that lifts another’s eyes to see dawn breaking on the horizon once more. It is the miracle we can always count on to give us reason to rise each day and overcome whatever challenges bar our path. And for that light, I will always be grateful.
