My interest in pursuing a Master’s degree in Computer Science was sparked during my undergraduate studies where I took several introductory and upper-level computer science courses. Through my coursework, I discovered how computer science principles can be applied to solve real-world problems and develop impactful technologies. I enjoyed the challenge of learning new programming languages and algorithms, as well as researching and implementing my own projects.
One project that stands out was for my advanced data structures course. Our task was to build a movie recommendation system using collaborative filtering. I chose to implement this using Spark DataFrames and MLlib to leverage the power of distributed computing. Through Apache Spark, my program was able to analyze a dataset containing over 1 million movie ratings to generate personalized recommendations for new users based on their preferences. I was fascinated by the algorithms behind collaborative filtering and how Big Data technologies like Spark can enable faster, more scalable solutions. This project strengthened my technical skills and deepened my interest in developing machine learning and data analytics solutions.
Outside of coursework, I sought additional learning opportunities through internships. During a summer internship at a startup that developed inventory management software for small retailers, I helpedmodernize their backend system and supported the development of a new sales analytics dashboard. I learnedvaluable real-world development practices like collaboration in agile teams, balancing multiple concurrent projects, and addressing customer needs. The internship also exposed me to processes like requirements gathering, project planning, and QA testing. I appreciated gaining practical industry experience to supplement my academic knowledge.
For my senior project, I worked with a team of students to develop an educational web and mobile application called LearnIt. Our aim was to create an engaging and personalized learning experience for K-12 students. As the lead developer, I designed the app architecture using a modular React/Flutter approach to enable sharing code between the web and Android/iOS versions. I also implemented features like adaptive quizzes that adjusted question difficulty based on user performance, as well as analytics to measure usage and assess effectiveness. The most rewarding part of this project was presenting our work at an on-campus showcase and receiving positive feedback. It was fulfilling to apply my skills to create a solution with potential real-world benefits.
After graduating with my Bachelor’s in Computer Science, I worked as a software engineer at a biotech startup. My role involved developing tools to process genomic data and identify biomarkers. I gained experience building core components of the data processing pipelines using languages like Python and deploying models into production. I also collaborated cross-functionally with bioinformaticians and biologists to understand domain-specific problems and design effective solutions. Working in this environment deepened my interest in the intersection of computational methods and life sciences. I felt I lacked some fundamental knowledge that would allow me to contribute more significantly to projects at the cutting edge of these fields.
That is why I am eager to further my education through your graduate program. The advanced coursework, research opportunities, and resources available will enable me to expand my technical skills and gain a deeper understanding of areas like machine learning, databases, and systems. In particular, I am interested in pursuing electives or a capstone project focused on applications of computational techniques to genomics or bioinformatics problems. I believe a Master’s degree is the natural next step for me to take my career in computer science to the next level. Your rigorous academic program and resources will allow me to develop as a technical leader able to drive meaningful innovation at companies working on problems centered around data, personalization, and improving lives through technology.
