Upon entering, we were immediately greeted with warmth—both in temperature and atmosphere. Warm woods, taupe walls, dim lighting, and flickering candles created an inviting and cozy space. The dining room was nicely sized but intimate with lots of small tables, creating a romantic ambiance perfect for couples or small groups. Soft jazz played in the background at a low volume, allowing for easy conversation without having to raise our voices. Our server seamlessly guided us to our table, which had a perfect view of the open kitchen where we could watch the chefs at work prepping dishes. The vintage decor, with antique mirrors and sconces added to the charming French countryside vibe. Service
From the moment we were seated, our server Maxime made us feel welcome. He was friendly, attentive and clearly knowledgeable about both the extensive wine list and menu items. Maxime provided clear explanations of specials and pairings without being overbearing. Both of our drink orders (a Bordeaux blend for me and an Alsatian Gewurztraminer for Emma) were delivered promptly. Throughout the meal, Maxime was consistently checking on us without being intrusive—the ideal balance. He had suggested we start with the country pâté and a selection of artisanal cheeses, which were perfectly portioned small plates ideal for sharing as an appetizer. Both dishes were delicious and Maxime was on hand to provide any accompaniments we needed or answer questions about the dishes. At the end of the meal, Maxime packaged up our leftovers with care and bid us farewell, promising to be sure to mention our praise to the chef. Service truly makes or breaks a dining experience and Maxime’s warmth and professionalism elevated our meal.

Food Quality
The menu at Chez Michel Bistro focuses on classic bistro fare with an emphasis on local, seasonal ingredients prepared with care and integrity. Starting with our appetizers of pâté maison and assorted cheeses, the quality and flavors really shone through. The velvety smooth pâté had a rich pork and brandy flavor, served with cornichons, whole-grain mustard and bread for spreading. The five cheeses Maxime selected for our tasting truly let the high quality dairy shine through with varying textures and intensities. Both plates were generous in portion for sharing but not overwhelming.

For our entrées, I selected the coq au vin—a classic French chicken stew braised in red wine, mushrooms and lardons. The tender chicken fell off the bone into a silky red wine sauce that was highlighted with robust mushroom and bacon flavors but not too heavy or alcoholic. The dish was perfectly portioned and accompanied by creamy mashed potatoes and haricots verts. Emma opted for the bouillabaisse, a fish stew overflowing with shrimp, scallops, mussels and white fish in a saffron-tomato broth. Fresh herbs and a nice kick of Pernod let the seafood flavors shine through the light yet complex broth. We both agreed these dishes truly captured the essence of classic French comfort food but with bright, clean flavors befitting a seasonal autumn menu.

To finish our indulgent evening, we shared a slice of tarte Tatin—a warm upside down apple tart served a la mode. The shortcrust pastry was buttery and flaky surrounding caramelized apples which had just the right balance of tang and sweetness. A few scoops of vanilla ice cream melted into the hot apples, creating a decadent yet not too rich ending to our meal. Both the portion size and price point of $10 felt very reasonable.

Overall, the food we sampled at Chez Michel showcased exemplary technique and an emphasis on letting high quality, seasonal ingredients shine with minimal adornment needed. Both texture and flavors were spot on for classic bistro fare with a refined, modern approach. I would highly recommend any of the dishes we tried as well as exploring other options on the seasonally rotating menu. The quality and thought put into both ingredients and preparation was abundantly clear.

Value
Given the quality of ingredients, expertise in preparation, and charm of the atmosphere, I was surprised and pleased with the reasonable prices. While not the most budget-friendly option, the portion sizes and price points felt very fair for a neighborhood special occasion restaurant. Our bottle of wine, two appetizers, two entrees, and a dessert came to $135 including tax and 20% gratuity—certainly higher than a typical neighborhood eatery but quite reasonable for a Michelin bib gourmand level meal. As a special holiday splurge, the combination of price, quality and charm made for an excellent value especially compared to similar caliber restaurants in our area. I would not hesitate to return for special occasions or spend a bit more here than other options knowing the care and expertise that goes into every dish. The overall experience felt like an exceptional value for money well spent on truly enjoyable fine dining.
