A watershed is an area of land where all of the water that is under it or drains off of it goes into the same place. Watershed boundaries are determined by gradients in the land. Every person lives within a watershed and depends on the services and resources watersheds provide, such as freshwater, wildlife habitat, recreation, and more. Effective watershed management plays a vital role in protecting these valuable resources.

Watersheds are naturally occurring hydrologic units but their boundaries and functions can be impacted by human activities like agriculture, urbanization, deforestation and dams. Watershed management involves analyzing watershed boundaries, land use, soil type, hydrology and other factors to identify problems and issues within the watershed that may negatively impact water quality or quantity. Management plans are then developed to address problems, maintain watershed health and ensure long-term sustainable use of water resources. Some key aspects and goals of watershed management include protecting water supplies, reducing pollution and erosion, preventing flooding, conserving habitat and biodiversity, monitoring water quality, and engaging stakeholders.
