The introduction of a research paper is one of the most important parts of the paper. It needs to grab the reader’s attention and introduce them to your research. At a minimum, the introduction should do the following:
Hook the Reader
The very beginning of your introduction needs to hook the reader in and make them want to keep reading. You can accomplish this with an interesting fact, statistic, or question that is related to your topic. This engages the reader and piques their curiosity. For example, if you were writing a paper about teen driving habits, you could start with an interesting statistic about accidents caused by distracted driving among teens.
Provide Background Information
Your introduction should give some background information on the topic to provide context and familiarize the reader with the subject. You may discuss the history of the issue, previous research that has been conducted, or define any important terms related to your topic. For the teen driving example, you could discuss previous studies on adolescent risky behaviors and accident rates. The goal is to give enough context for the reader to understand the topic without going into too much detail.
State the Purpose
Clearly state the purpose or intent of your research paper. What motivated you to research this topic? What are you trying to discover or analyze? For the teen driving paper, you could state that the purpose is to examine how technology use like phones impacts teen driving behaviors and accidents.
Thesis Statement
The introduction should include a clear, concise thesis statement near the end that presents the main argument or conclusion of your paper. A good thesis states the topic, scope, and key points you will address. For example, “This paper examines how the use of cell phones negatively impacts teen driving behaviors and contributes to an increased risk of accidents according to studies of distracted driving.”
Forecast Structure
Briefly outline the main points or topics that will be discussed in your paper. This gives the reader a sense of the structure and scope of your argument. For the teen driving paper, you could forecast that the paper will define distracted driving, analyze studies on teen cell phone use and driving accidents, and discuss policy recommendations to address the issue.

Context and Significance
Explain why the topic is interesting, important, controversial or relevant. Convince the reader that studying your topic has merit or significance. You could discuss consequences of teen distracted driving like injuries or fatalities.
Literature Review
Briefly summarize any related or foundational research on the topic. Mention a few key studies, theories or seminal works. Reference any literature that helped formulate your argument.
Definitions
Define any specialized terminology, concepts, theories, movements or time periods relevant to the topic. This helps ensure readers are “on the same page” in understanding your analysis and argument. Terms like distracted driving should be defined.
Limitations and Delimitations
Acknowledge any limitations in the scope or methodology of your research. Delineate exactly what will and won’t be covered. The paper may only focus on cell phones and not address other distractions like passengers.
Transition to Body
Connect the introduction to the forthcoming sections with a brief transition sentence. Something like “The following sections will examine…” helps guide the reader into the core content.
Review Criteria:
The introduction should have a clear structure and flow logically.
It should engage the reader from the start and raise interest in the topic.
Background and context should orient the reader without being overly verbose.
The purpose, thesis, and structure forecast should be clearly communicated.
Relevant terms and related works should be appropriately acknowledged.
